Tim Hume / journalist, editor

I’m an award-winning freelance journalist and editor, based in London.

I’ve worked at outlets including CNN, VICE News, Al Jazeera and New Zealand’s Sunday Star-Times newspaper, reporting across Europe and Asia-Pacific, while my freelance work has appeared in publications including The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and TIME.

I specialise in long-form features, across a wide range of subjects but particularly stories from the margins. In recent years, I’ve written extensively about extremism and online culture, focusing on the overlapping and increasingly radical spheres of the far right, conspiracy movements and the manosphere.

That’s included investigations into Andrew Tate’s online empire, undercover reporting inside the sovereign citizen movement, and coverage of right-wing extremist networks across Europe.

I also presented Decade of Hate, a series of VICE News video reports drawing on my coverage of the global far-right, which has racked up more than 13 million views online.

I’ve won numerous media awards, including newspaper feature writer of the year at the New Zealand Newspaper Publishers’ Awards, and have been a shortlisted finalist in others including Private Eye’s Paul Foot Award for Investigative Journalism.

I’ve also made media appearances including discussing the sovereign citizen movement in the BBC documentary “Kidnapped By My Mum”, and talking about my work on outlets like Radio New Zealand, the Ireland AM TV show and the Hacked podcast.

I’m available for writing, editing and other media commissions. You can check out some of my work here, or contact me here.
